I hope Radio 3 will celebrate the Boulez centenary adequately; after all, he had quite an impact at the BBC and they must have a lot of archive recordings. But seeing the way things are going, I fear it will be just one of his shortest pieces slipped in late at night.

Isn't there some sort of Modernist Music series due which presumably will include him?

I suspect they have something decent planned.

Mike - excellent work there, thank you.

            Something wrong with Ketelbey, though...

Seconded! I'll be referring to this throughout the year.

In addition, Bliss, Fisher, Dallapiccola, Shostakovich, Anderson , Acampora and Hermann should all be in the 'And Deaths' section rather than 'Births'

Bliss Sir Arthur Edward Drummond 1891 1975
                Fisher Ernst 1900 1975
                Dallapiccola Luigi 1904 1975
                Shostakovich Dmitri 1906 1975
                Anderson Leroy 1908 1975
                Acampora Vincenzo 1911 1975
                Herrman Bernard 1911 1975

But apart from these few forgivable slips, it is an excellent resource for the year, so many thanks to Mike.

Yes, an interesting list, thanks. Coleridge-Taylor is an interesting omission.

If living conductors are included, Sir Simon Rattle (b 1955) has a big birthday coming...

I think he might even be getting a big party thrown for him in Munich!

The two concerts he gave with the LSO last week both included new commissions from George Benjamin and Mark-Anthony Turnage to celebrate his 70th birthday. The second concert (with the Turnage commission) will be on R3 next Monday.

I was at the second concert and much enjoyed it, especially a fine RVW 5.

I'm looking forward to hearng the broadcast of that . It will, I think, be the first I've heard of Simon conducting Tippett or Vaughan Williams apart from a Berlin Tallis Fantasia some years ago. He has of course, done quite a bit of Elgar and Britten on disc.
