    2025 Notable Anniversaries

What anniversaries have we got coming up in 2025?

I can think of Palestrina (born 1525), Johann Strauss II (born 1825) and, in the world of books, Jane Austen (born 1775).

    Any more?

Luciano Berio (b1925), Pierre Boulez (b1925), Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (b1875), Albert Ketelbey (b1875) and Fritz Kreisler (b1875) are ones I can immediately think of.

Ravel (born 1875); also Glière and Hahn.

      A Scarlatti (died 1725)
      Bizet (died 1875)
      Moskowski and Satie (died 1925)
Blacher, Bliss, Dallapiccola, Grandjany, and Shostakovich (died 1975)
Schuller and Theodorakis also born 1925.

I thought Vivaldi was born in 1678.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor has an 150th anniversary this year, having been born in 1875. I suspect that it will be treated as a notable anniversary.

Ravel was also born in 1875, as were Gliere, Fritz Kreisler, Franco Alfano and Albert Ketelby. Ravel looks like the only one of these whose anniversary is likely to be celebrated.

1925 gives us Andriessen, Berio, Boulez and Theodorakis, as well as Ron Goodwin, so lots to celebrate there.

"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Can't think how I managed to miss Luciano and Pierre!

Erik Satie died in 1925. He's buried in Arcueil cemetery....but beware, we wasted half a day trying to find his grave - perhaps the anniversary of his death will prompt the local authorities to stick up a couple of signs....it's a very big cemetery! Worth a look at the apartment block he lived in too....now student accomodation - some of whom no doubt walk back there from Paris as Satie did in the dead of night.

                Bizet 150th death anniversary
                Andreas Hammerschmidt 300th death anniversary
                Salieri 200th death anniversary
                Alessandro Scarlatti 300th death anniversary

Have to say, not a big fan of this 'anniversary' malarkey - it's so accidental that we are tied in to the decimal system. If we had something more fun like the duodecimal this hang-up on centenaries &c wd end up with totally different results. Just sayin'

                  Oops?
Info from Eric Gilder, The Dictionary of Composers and their Music.
The entry for Vivaildi (as opposed to the calendar entry in the second part of the book) gives his birthdate as 4 March 1676.
Old style? So do we now say 1675? I thought the year went to 25 March, so if anything wouldn't it go the other way, to 1677?

PS: Wiki gives 4 March 1678, so Gilder must be wrong. We all believe Wiki, don't we?

Well, I recall that in 1978 R3 did do some sort of marking of the 300th anniversary....

Sorry, misread it and put a space in notable...

Jurriaan Andriessen - brother of Louis and son of Hendrik - about whose music I know nothing. Recommended works?
