    The Quality Press?

...from today's Sunday Times profile of Tom Courtenay

" .......devised a one man show, Pretending To Be Philip Larkin, the Hull-born former poet laureate..."

Well, maybe Tom Courtenay's one-man show represents a sort of parallel universe?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I am afraid for quality press we have to look abroad:
Le Figaro, Le Monde, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, NRC Handelsblad, Volkskrant, Corriere della Sera, Reppublica.
The only British newspaper approaching the in depth reporting quality of these is The Financial Times.

...but without the bl**dy non-news-items which make up the paper daily, let alone the weekend editions, not ot mention the ads.
And where do you find in ANY British newspaper articles of a length of say between 3/4 and a whole page [without ads or more than one pic] devoted to an in depth report with back grounds of any problem (financial, social, political, cultural, arts, international....), as you do in Le Figaro?
[and the Grauniad is not a match for Libération either...]

Over the last few months the Guardian has had The Long Read running for several days (and pages) each week. Subjects covered have included the medical potential of the infusion of young blood, the threat to Alaskan wildlife of oil drilling, Julian Baggini on free will (excellent), and "Why is it so hard to make new pandas?"....

They cover around three pages, with photos. Very good reads, all of them, when you have time. (There's still three in my saved pile...)
Anyway, there's much to be said for concision - still plenty of breadth & depth in the Guardian's Journal & Opinion pages...

I was purely referring to it's politics.... (read this quick before it gets cut!)
