On Sunday someone, I would suspect from India, rang me to make an appointment to check my gas meter …… I asked why do you want to check my gas meter? He replied because we are not getting readings ….. I said you’re not getting electricity readings either …. Can you see that …. amazingly he replied … No I have no access to your records …. so I pointed out that after a series of web chats we had established my electricity meter was not communicating …. So he said, after asking a series of COVID, parking and health and safety questions, he we get me an appointment from the system …. and music appeared …. then the line went dead. Yesterday a young lady rang and we had Groundhog Day before I was again cut off ….. it’s considerably worse than terrible customer service …..
If anyone is still awake ….. so the next day I got another young lady from overseas who was very stern and would entertain no talk of problems with our electricity meter and/or in-house display …. Her “records” said the problem was with the gas meter and they were coming to fix it on 10 October ….. So ….

    The Gasman Comes To Call

He did not work for EDF, but for a company they subcontract all their smart meter work in the North East to. Checked the gas meter first then the electricity meter and the In House Display - IHD. Didn’t seem happy with the make of the electricity meter - Itron, as he said they were having to change “loads of them” ….. quite swiftly diagnosed the problem was with the electricity meter and that it needed changing … he had meters in his van but couldn’t change it as he had no specific instructions from EDF to do so and if he did so without this his company wouldn’t get paid. So he told me that if I heard nothing from EDF in a week to ring up and tell them of his visit, which they should have on their records and request a further visit with Change Electricity Meter in the work instructions ……..
    Stronger men would cry …..

Hang in there, Anton; we're all waiting for Tuesday's thrilling episode in this saga.

Good luck. At least it seems like you had a visit from someone who knew what he should be doing, even if he wasn't allowed to do it.

I have had such every year when someone comes to check my gas boiler over, and yet not one has managed to cure the leak, or rather brief spurt of water from under the device, which occurs every time I have the central heating switched on.

To a nerd like me not being able to read my meter is a form of purgatory ……

So MeterMan didn't close the door behind him? I hope he likes his chips unseasoned else you'll be looking at assault and battery at the next smart(not)meter encounter.

Sorry to use this place as a means of recording the detailed complaint I will eventually make against the bungling EDF …..

Latest events - when I checked my gas meter a couple of mornings ago there was a reading and all has been OK since.
The same day I got a WhatsApp message to say EDF were aware of my various problems and would “ …. be in touch ….”
So yesterday a young lady rang up and said they were coming to check the gas meter …. I said “ … and the electricity meter as your engineer said that’s where the problem is … ???? “ - she said no just the gas meter as “ … that is what my sheet says …. “ I told her the highlights of the saga and she said “ let me check “…. 10 minutes later she was back and said “I see what you mean but I can only work from my sheet” and then with an echo of remembered times past “ …. Someone will be in touch …”

                    Groundhog Day?
This kind of scenario is a constant in the consumer slot in the Guardian, endless circling with the deadlock only broken when the press gets involved. The sums of money and lengths of time some people get locked into can be shocking.

My "supplier" has decided to do what I thought it would eventually and put me on monthly DD. Now that I'm getting my state pension and so have a stable income stream that won't be the problem it would have been, which is just as well given this not so thinly veiled naff-off at the bottom of the letter "If for any reason you're not happy with your new payment plan, you're free to switch to a different supplier". As they very well know existing customers are just about locked into whatever supplier they currently have, companies don't need to go touting for business, and anecdotally are doing their best(deliberately or just due to high levels of incompetence) to avoid taking on new or transferring customers.

I am currently with OVO ( didn’t they sell washing powder originally) and I can adjust my direct debit payment. They suggest a minimum level for me to be in credit at the end of my current deal, but otherwise the choice of payment level seems to be mine.

No doubt there is a catch, and they seem unable to fix a glitch on meter readings which derives from an old account that I had with them, but such th8ngs are broadly inevitable.

Hope you sort your probs out AG. If you can’t , then nobody can I suspect.

"Well, tell them their entry to my home will be barred unless they've come to check the electricity meter. No pasaran."

PS Blimey, I was just going downstairs to see how the builders were getting on and they've blocked off the bottom of the staircase. No pasaran!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Eggs I think, actually. What entomologists call ovipositors: the parts of an insect's anatomy you wouldn't want to draw too much attention to.

Should save us a few quid anyway.

Those keen on planning for such things need to know their Load Block letter, to be found , possibly , on your electricity bill.
