In the UK it is possible to find the telephone number of most people if they have not chosen to go ex-directory.

Is there a similar facility for the USA, or is all the information blocked by gatekeeper sites attempting to extort money in varying degrees?
I can see sites which give all sorts of details for a charge - who's related to whom, who's doing who, who's been done by whom etc., but a simple thing like a telephone number .....
I really do not want to have to join Facebook or similar sites - but particularly Facebook - in order to find numbers of people I know.
