However, a rather officious member of the Usher Hall’s staff insisted on searching Mrs. PG’s handbag. Now, we’re both in our 60’s and were quite well dressed. What exactly are the staff looking for.

They probably reason that anyone can put on nice clothes, and perhaps recall that (e.g.) the JSO protestors at Wimbledon last year were not in the first flush of their youth. It's a bit of a pain at the Albert Hall, where a bottle of wine (which happened to be a gift rather than something to drink on the premises) had to be checked in last year - gone are the days of booking a box and bringing a proper interval picnic with a much nicer bottle than anything I could afford to buy at the bar. On the other hand, they don't seem to care about a packet of sandwiches or a small bottle of water or Coke. The worst London venue I've seen for this is the Roundhouse, where the bag screener would not allow anything edible inside the building even though we wanted to leave it in a bag in the cloakroom, which was only a few feet away.

I carry a work backpack which “has” to be checked from time to time at museums etc. It has about 10 compartments . They usually stop after looking in three.
