I'm discovereing more and more of the Essex farmland countryside - and it beats musak anyday!

The largish area of flat countryside bordered to the west by the Ingrebourne river and nature reserve, the A13 to the south, B007 north from Horndon on the Hill to Laindon via Langdon Hills, and the A127 (Southend Arterial) to the north, offers a good few miles of uniquely atmospheric countryside for cycling. It has been my intention to take my bike on the District to Upminster, which is as far as my old grumpy's travelcard permits, and spend several hours taking to to the lanes and B roads, perhaps ending up at the Thatcher's Arms (no relation!) in Great Warley before heading back to Upminster via Tyler's common, which affords fantastic views of the QE bridge at Dartford and Canary Wharf on a clear day at the point where the M25 cuts through.

Maybe we could tie up sometime then, should you feel inclined. Though I would warn that at coming up to 70 I'm not as energetic as I once was, especially if today's speeding cloned and ray-banned lycra brigade is any yardstick!

I only walk at 3-4 mph and do like to see the scenery as well, and talk to people en route. Coming up to 70 is in any case a mere adolescent. As long as you can down 4 pints in 30 minutes and walk up to 10 miles you will be fine! (Not to mention chatting up a few well endowed young ladies as well ... )

What a strange statement. Hilary would be lovely. Yes, a fine player with certain works, (especially the Schoenberg concerto) and I do fancy her. (I understand she's off work at the moment due to a swollen tummy ...) Nicola is OK too. Janine looks great, and I would not kick her out of bed as it were. Not very keen on her fiddle playing though, and her Strad sounds very thin, can't think why ... There's one called Leila that i like too, and she plays exteremy well. Even Ida would give you a good run for your money, and she was a great player, and possibly still is at about 85 or so ... (I laways liked her high heels, and she had great balance even at 82 which was about the last time I saw her).

Certainly cannot disagree with you there; indeed, I used for year to struggle to get to grips with that work and I found her recording of it a revelation - so much so, in fact, that in a moment of unguarded enthusiasm I told the late Malcolm MacDonald (a leading authority on Schönberg) that she even made it sound like a piece of music!

Indeed - which might be thought to prove, among other things, that someone else fancies her too...

Nicola is OK too

Except that, as a fellow Menuhin School student with Alina Ibragimova, she has a very high regard indeed for her colleague's playing; it was Alina, indeed, who gave her endless encouragement of the right kind when she was going through a difficult time artistically, having done too much too soon, as it were.

I note that no mention is made as to how you might get her there in the first place, but never mind.

Josefowicz. Canadian. Wide repertoire. Fine player but cannot bear to watch her in action; I almost had to turn my head away and just listen when she premièred Colin Matthews' violin concerto almost six years back at Symphony Hall in Brum.

She was extraordinary indeed; I've no idea what her playing's like these days, not having heard her live for a while - and yes, she'll be 87 in a few months' time.

As an example of how to review violinists intelligently and informatively, I'd give that a mark of ? out of ten...
