Tube Strike

Does anyone know anything about an impending transport strike? We keep hearing bits and pieces. It could really effect our theatre plans the next two nights. We are staying in So. Kensington but are particularly concerned about getting to the Globe on Wednesday night.

For a few seconds I thought we were going to get into an "interesting" discussion on a banned current affairs topic ....

Let's try this for Wednesday after 21.30 back to South Kensington - see below.

You can get a nicer presentation from the TFL web site - Journey Planner. You have to put in the start and end locations, and then Edit the query to select the Bus only option.

Seems that there isn't a TFL smartphone App - see http://blog.tfl.gov.uk/2014/03/12/wh...no-app-part-1/
There may be other good ones, based on the TFL data - but I'm not sure of any which replicate the Journey Planner.
There are tools such as Bus Guru which supposedly tell you when the next bus is going to arrive. For various reasons they are often pretty useless.

Hopefully you can decipher this. Taxis will perhaps be the easiest option, and may not be unreasonably expensive if several of you are travelling.

I have guessed your start and end points - you may want to choose some others. The journey time looks to be around an hour - probably slightly more, by using bus only.

This route will not get you home again !! If you give yourselves plenty of time you could take in the café in The (?) Tate Modern which has good views.

That's probably quite a nice way to go. I had thought that the strike wouldn't take effect until in the evening, but this page suggests that even late afternoon will be problematic - from around 17.00 with the strike on the Tube starting "officially" at 18.30 - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/tr...e-details.html

Going early could be a good idea, in which case buses should still work, and there are attractions such as Tate Modern not too far away. There are other attractions along the river, such as the National Theatre, which would also give access to the river bus services. See https://tfl.gov.uk/maps/river

I earlier gave details of how to get back which I thought would be more critical, though in fact it may be problematic in both directions. The TFL Journey Planner would seem to be an essential tool, or else access to taxi services. Taxis might be difficult to find though, as I expect others will be competing for them.

Why is it that when the equilibrium of London is disturbed, it becomes a national disaster?

For the rest of the country, where public transport ranges from iffy to diabolical, it creates more than a few smiles.

I hesitate to encourage main line/network rail travel, as I think some ASLEF drivers will also be going on strike - see the earlier web page link.

We wouldn't want Richard, family and friends to get stuck in Peckham**, would we?

**some of the trains to Clapham Junction go via Peckam Rye - is that Del boy and Rodney territory?

Other stations might work - e.g Olympia at the South Kensington end - though probably a bit far out.
Trains to London Bridge also go from Charing Cross. Cannon Street is another possible en route station, and rather surprisingly there are some direct, but very slow and long winded trains from Victoria to London Bridge, which seem to go via strange places like Sydenham and New Cross Gate!

Check on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ and also check news etc. to see if the drivers on those lines will be on strike.

I sympathise, EA. but Richard is in London on his hols and a Tube strike is the last thing he would want. Me, I'd just walk it everywhere as I have had to do before.

I can do the walk, despite recent heart surgery, but my 83 year old mother in law can't slog it back to South Kensington.

I can appreciate that. You'll need a cab, though these will be overstretched.

However, your unenviable situation reminds me of the day we took my mother-in-law (who was also approximately 83 at the time) to see the Tall Ships Race departure from Tynemouth. We had driven to Whitby, caught an Esk Valley train to Middlesbrough, and then trains to Newcastle and Tynemouth. We knew which was the last train south from Newcastle that would enable us to get back to Whitby, but there were considerable delays on the Tyne and Wear Metro between Tynemouth and Newcastle. Our train arrived in Newcastle two minutes before the departure of the East Coast train we had to catch.
I told my mother-in-law I would try to hold the train, and rushed up the escalator two at a time and arrived at the departure platform with our train still there. To my amazement, my mother-in-law was right behind me, rather out of breath, but still standing. Frau Alpensinfonie and I were worried, as mother-in-law had angina. However, we were all very lucky, because she said on the journey home that she had never felt better, and her health improved further in the months and years that followed. But we knew that it could have been a very different outcome.

Good Luck , Richard and entourage, with uber, my daughter uses them regularly both in Manchester and London. I didn't quite follow what Dave2002 meant by "Peckham", my idea was one of several buses South Ken to West Brompton , then 30, 40 mins to Waterloo via Clapham Jn. and there are several buses from outside Waterloo to Southwark Street for the "Globe". have you been told to take cushions ?! tfl say that London Overground are not on strike.
