Most of us would probably rather pay to not have to do this.

You can download to an iPad/iPhone/iPod as I have done to all 3 by a menu option .......

Yes you can. There's an option to have selected music available offline.

You can download music to listen offline, but I imagine that if your subscription expires you no longer have access to it.

OK - so it's a bit like offline mode in Spotify then. I stand corrected - and will have to check this out. Not knowing enough about this, I assumed that Apple would make one pay to do an iTunes download for anything more permanent. Do they have any form of DRM so as to prevent the downloaded files being copied. I can't imagine that their business model would allow "free loading" of material which otherwise might have to be paid for.

Having written that though, I do still wonder if the real time constraint would still apply. My vague recollection of the Spotify system is that the offline mode does indeed work, but maybe one has to stream the music first with the offline configuration set. If so that would deter people who wanted to download many GBs of music in a hurry. Another constraint might be the quality level - which could be reduced to something barely tolerable if the company wanted to deter certain types of downloading.

Perhaps the same way as iPlayer deletes TV programmes when they date expire.

Most probably - but I suppose there is nothing to stop you downloading it again if you keep your subscription going. On a tangent how long have you been able to download exciting things like Breakfast from the BBC Radio Player?

I sit corrected - I thought you had to pay the iTunes store if you downloaded a song and it wasn't part of the £9.99 Apple Music deal.

Streamed music that's stored locally has DRM to prevent someone downloading a lot of music, cancelling their subscription, and then keeping the music. The same as Spotify and Qobuz.

i imagine the music app tries to "call home" when it's used, and if that's unsuccessful for a predetermined number of weeks/months access to the local music is inhibited - that's the way Adobe CC products work.
