As a caveat I am listening via the headphone socket on the MacBook and so maybe any differences between the two systems is masked by any inherent deficiencies in using this socket. I do have a reasonable USB > DAC somewhere or other...I'll try and find it and give it a whirl. When all's said and done, it's only background music for me and so Qobuz works just fine.

I also have Apple kit, and sometimes listen via headphones through the headphone socket. Casual listening is usually OK, but more concentrated listening does usually show up problems. I also frequently feed the headphone output out via an optical cable to a DAC, and from there to a different headphone output. The quality is better if one takes the trouble to listen more carefully. I believe that dedicated headphone amplifiers are reportedly better still.

I do really dislike some poor quality sound, so for me the audio quality has to be above a certain threshold for me to tolerate it. However, for fairly casual listening I do find that 256 kbps aac or 320 kbps mp3 are usually good enough - at least to avoid some of the worst problems of poor quality sources.

You'll probably notice the difference if you put in a good DAC, but (and one or two - perhaps JLW - might disagree) once you have one good DAC swapping DACs round trying to get an improvement can become costly and difficult. I'm sure that some are better, but as with much audio, sure-fire audible improvements may come at a very significant additional cost - the laws of diminishing marginal returns start to kick in quite quickly.

I personally do not rely on streaming services for music I really care about, though I have to say that I am listening to streaming more and more. If I've listened to a piece once or twice via a streaming service, and then want to hear it again, I usually intend to buy a higher quality version (at least CD quality), though I must admit that sometimes I don't - curiosity or whatever having been satisfied already from a streaming service.

Do you have iTunes? Are you running a PC or a Mac or something else?

I don't know if it works with any software other than iTunes, but if you do have that in the Mac version you just click on New (yep, that's the menu name - why on earth it isn't Apple Music - don't ask me ....!!!!) then search for whatever you want, and it seems easy enough.

The other issue is registering for the free Trial, and then going into the Account settings to ensure that it doesn't automatically start charging your credit card in three months. You'll need an Apple ID for that - easy enough to get one - but if you've not been there/done that before, it's a bit of extra work and you may need to provide a credit card number. Some people might be uneasy about giving out CC numbers, though I've found Apple to be reasonable enough so far, and I've been using the iTunes Store for many years now.

I think you can't actually download anything without using some technical tricks. There may be ways. One very boring way is to stream to some form of external recorder, but that will be done in real time, so could take days, and would be very tedious. Most of us would probably rather pay to not have to do this.
