There is no way to force everyone who reads the forum to accept that comments posted here are not representative of FoR3 and/or its supporters. The homepage displays fairly prominently the words: "This is NOT the official messageboard of Friends of Radio 3 […] Opinions expressed on any part of The Radio 3 Forum are those of members of the public, not of the forum administration or of FoR3."

One would have thought that was clear enough.
It is - to people who read it!

I think there is a tendency for folks to think otherwise these days (is this new?)

Reminds me of the LPO Jerusalem Quartet Proms affair, I seem to recall folks expressing the view that ANYTHING said by a player from the orchestra could be assumed to be representative of the organisation.
and all those folks who have 'gagging' clauses in their contracts which go beyond what is reasonable (but that is getting "political" )

Precisely. But there is no legislation to force people to read it (or even remember what they've read six months previously).

Factually, some people confuse membership of the forum with 'supporting' Friends of Radio 3. Being a 'supporter' means that people have contacted us and specifically confirmed that they agree with us and support the campaign. We have for some years now also asked them to confirm that they wish to be added to our newsmailing and supporters lists. If they don't reply, they aren't added to the lists, as in the event of a complaint of 'spamming' we have to provide evidence that people have agreed to receive mailings.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

And, by the way, I shall have to apologise to Bryn that what I said in explanation to his initial complaint was inaccurate. I did certain tests to check it before posting, but by an oversight the test methodology was faulty But that's life.

bit of a hypothetical this - if one came to this forum, so to speak, 'blind' without knowing its name, and read the posts - would one immediately think it had anything to do with Radio 3 ?

gardening, birdwatching, football, CD buying, orchestral reminiscences, the weather, eating out, deaths of actors etc. Not that I'm saying the forum shouldn't talk about any of these things, and a myriad others - but are they specifically anything to do with Radio 3 ?

I suppose the titles of the boards might lead one to wonder whether it was about Radio 3 … but the proportion of 'off-topic' posts would give rise to doubt.

Personally, I'd prefer the forum to be smaller and about Radio 3 - but who am I?

I have tried to make that point before, but it's good to see it being reinforced. Indeed I can now barely remember anything where a forum had any impact on the BBC and in particular R3. The one case I can remember was the "outrage" at reduced DAB bit rates, which was seemingly succesful in mitigating the dreadful effects of severe digital compression - BUT I can't actually remember whether that was due to messages on the BBC's own boards, rather than this one. I genuinely can't remember.

Since then what obvious benefits have come from a community board which have any impact on the BBC and R3. I know there are behind the scenes activities, but I deliberately used the word obvious?

I feel that many of us here are sympathetic to R3, but not necessarily as it is now, or as it may seem to be developing. We perhaps have a mental image of an idealised R3 listener which barely exists.

the 'danger' of that, I suppose, being a big drop-off of members and one would end up talking to oneself (often the most satisfying conversations, I find)
