    Why would it do that?

(I wouldn't have thought you'd be worried anyway)

One of the reasons why I used to like reading and also contributing to the now defunct area was that I have long felt that people who frequent these parts have interesting things to say, even if I don't always agree with them. Maybe it is possible to open up some discussions in areas such as Ideas and P3. I flatter myself by imagining that I'm surrounded by intelligent and intellectual companions on these boards, and I have learnt a lot. Perhaps I am wrong, but I like deluding myself.

As we note, with the newest issues regarding the consultations on the BBC's future and its funding, we get back into the "P" word again, not to mention other interesting and important issues, such as Greece, Eurozone, Climate Change, and US/Europe Trade Agreements.

Some who used to have interesting comments on matters other than music included Inspector Calls, Resurrection Man, and Richard Barrett and a few others. Most of these have now departed, or post/read very infrequently. At least ahinton is still here, and although his main interest may be in music, his views on other things are also interesting.

        Ah well, times change.

One odd thing has occurred to me after this debacle though, given the interest in music, we don't ever seem to have discussed much about mathematics. It has been asserted in the past that there are links between music and mathematics, and I'm surprised this has not, as far as I know, ever been investigated in these boards. Other connected areas might include chess. I thought that one or two of the great chess players wrote music - but maybe not.

At least mathematics and chess don't involve the "P" word, do they?

One possible reason why maths is not much discused in that with something where any quantity from zero to infinity can apply to literally anything or nothing, there ain't much anybody can do about it.

But I certainly agree with your veiled statement that excluding the elephant blocking the view that occupies the room from discussion on this forum on behalf of a few thin-skinned self-elected representatives of "middle England" has curtailed meaningful discussions on many issues, current and otherwise, and that this is probably the reason for the departure of quite a few members - more's the pity.

But why are you so keen on discussing politics and current affairs on this forum? As many of us have said, there are plenty of other forums where highly intelligent and knowledgeable people gather and discuss precisely those matters, and you don’t even have to resign from this form to belong to other forums.

Is it because you feel safe here?

Caption please - I don't recognise any of those people.

However, the converse proposition does seem to hold - musicians do play chess - http://iplayoochess.com/2011/10/27/c...-of-guess-who/

Some of the departed members were trolls who only appeared to make political points, keeping a very low profile in musical discussions.

Hi doversoul, I don't know what Dave2002 thinks, but it seems very natural to want to discover opinions of people you know (at least virtually). It seems to me that that is one of the ways communities are built.

I do understand why FF feels she wants to keep this forum largely free of political discussions (mud slinging etc), though I must admit my heart does rather sink each time I see this or that exiled beyond the fortress walls.

Blimey, no wonder the country is going to the dogs

Didn't they teach you anything at school?

The problem is that it brings out the worst in people, and probably puts off more people than it attracts.

If that's the punchline what's the first line?

Sums it up in a sentence.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I don't know a lot about that, though I imagine ff would be one of the first to say that something being worthwhile is not about the number of people it attracts.

If you mean the 'mine's bigger than yours' stuff, I can sympathise.
But I thought there were many extremely thought-provoking and intelligent posts on the PC&A forum, and I think it's a loss to this forum. (I thought it was out of the way on a separate board anyway?). Anyway as I've said I do understand ff's position, the subject was raised and I commented. And I'd never ask For3 to keep my cardiovascular bouyancy in mind at all times (... I know what a selfish lot they are ).
