Do I??? I almost used that very phrase down thread. Was it just Bristol? - I thought everyone had a silver-coloured galvanised pig bin.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

That's another grumble: when our bins play the wild rover after the binmen have been and emptied them.

We have three bins, pale grey for recycling, brown for garden rubbish and waste food (these two are collected every fortnight) and black for all other rubbish, this being collected every fortnigtht on the day the others arent collected. It works well, and until recently we have put very little in the black bin. Now we have a new cat who is settllng in and until he is allowed outside we have to put his used litter in the black bin.

This morning I was pleased the Gerrit on the wagon as soon as we could with all the other small bags and remains of others’ Christmas food which arrived on our drive!

Eh? Was that due to the wind or thoughtless neighbours/passers by?

Anybody who still pours fat down the sink, please stop.

Disaster over Christmas was narrowly averted when on the morning before heading off to Scotland I noticed that one of our drains was unusually high, a sign of waste not getting to the public drain. Fortunately I earlier acquired a set of rods to do the unblocking - nobody else along the terrace seems interested even though the offending drain is openly accessible - and duly managed to do so, albeit more laboriously than on earlier occasions. There was a fair amount of evidence that fat dumping was the reason for the blockage.

                  Season's Greetings!

Save me from my neighbours: I can deal with my enemies.

I had a drain experience with neighbours who had clearly poured soil down their drain, blocking mine, and strenuously denied it, claiming (absurdly) that the shared drain went under their property without involving it in any way. I got permission from the next house further down to rod back through to the offenders' drain and it all came flooding through, clearing mine.

This was years ago; thankfully United Utilities have now accepted responsibility for the shared drain and have installed a fatberg detector.

Fraid I didn't! I found out later that the storm is named Gerrit - then I twigged.

Neighbours... indeed! We have a terrific neighbour on one side who has been popping in and feeding Puss while we are away; on the other side a newish neighbour who has done nothing active to communicate in the six months he has had the house, three of which have seen noisy refurbishment work going on throughout daylight hours. (And he's the one whose kitchen would have been first to flood, after hours, had I not acted.) You can't choose them...

We are exhorted to Stop BinDigestion: Don't Feed Your Bin by not putting foodstuffs into the ordinary waste bin.

Ah, instructions for rendering turkey fat and reusing for cooking:

As mentioned earlier - for very small quantities of fat - might be OK in the compost. Apparently newspaper - though maybe best if shredded - is quite good for compost bins.

Other comments: We used to live in Surrey - population over 1 million. Now live in the Highlands somewhat north of Inverness - population around 250 thousand.
Land area of Surrey - about 640 sq mile. Land area of Highland - over 9900 sq miles.

The local authority has now decided that all refuse will be sent south to an industrial plant near Dunbar - Viridor. Around 180-200 miles depending on routes from these parts. The furthest reaches from this region are almost 300 miles from Dunbar.

It has claimed that even allowing for the transport this is the cheapest and most environmentally friendly solution.
