… the first are spot-on, the ‘James’ element I had in mind was James MacMillan’s Visions of a November Spring

    Nonetheless, take it away McMaestro

    Edit: ah, you already did
Sorry, I didn't mean to jump the gun - your James is clearly more in line with the other two!
For new readers - your 'O' is post no. 899.

You were quite right about the ‘behind the times’ reference btw
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm struggling / guessing, but would Aaron, Michael T (??) & William have helped Eugene?

Well, the William I think you may have in mind is involved (without being operatic).

            Thanks for the hint.
I was thinking of William Walton.
So Aaron Copland is out of the running?

Walton it is, but I'm afraid you'll have to cast Aaron and Michael T aside.

Walton makes me think (wildly) of Larry Olivier... guessing that Eugene Ormandy is out. But I'm stumped as far as American composers go.

Your wild thought has led you to the answer, so ,.,.. what's the (repeated) connection between Olivier and Walton?
