Or, possibly, the Charles Ives song Grantchester?

I didn't know that Ives had set part of the poem. We await what will hopefully be cloughie's cheerful congratulatory confirmation!

Another singing day so delay in getting back to you.

Indeed all the groundwork from LMcD. Plus AD’s completion means the setting Honours go to LMcD.

Where might an incarcerated dummy, a town in Somerset and a doomed family lead you?

It would be useful to discover when and where the dummy was incarcerated.

Hardy's d'Urbervilles spring to mind, but they weren't. Aunt Ada's Starkadders weren't either.
Bodmin Jail has a dummy, as does our local Littledean Jail.

The incarceration took place outside the UK at some point in the first half of the 1940s.

... are we talking about some wartime Cunning Plan analogous to Operation Mincemeat &c?

                      .

                        .
The dummy was indeed created as part of a cunning wartime plan - but a very localized one.

POW camp? Colditz prisoners used dummies at roll call to cover up for escapees.

The wooden horse at Stalag Luft 3?

I think it's Albert as in Albert RN. This was the dummy constructed at Marlag O a POW camp for naval officers.

Albert was a dummy who took the place of a prisoner who was, for whatever reason, not present for roll-call. Albert is your first H and also the most southerly.
