Is the first from Rimsky-Korsakov's Op.50 Romances?
"The Maiden and the Sun", "The Singer", "Quiet is the Blue Sea", "I am Still Filled, Dear Friend"

Or César Cui's, "Kaleidoscope: 24 pieces for violin and piano", e.g. no. 9, "Orientale" = East(ern).
& Granados's 12 danzas españolas has an Oriental.

Also by Rimsky-Korsakov: The Easter Festival Overture...and one of the Granados Spanish Dances is 'Oriental'.

I think you're on to something, LMcD, with Oriental.

While you were typing, I'd added César Cui's Op. 50, "Kaleidoscope", e.g. no. 9, "Orientale" to my post...

How about Rachmaninov's "Oriental dance", Op 2 No 2?

But I still don't see how he got there from Feste Romane or indeed how the next response was Alborada del gracioso!
Brush up your Shakespeare and think Epiphany, then clown around!

Well, you did ask for an Easier E! I'd forgotten the Easter overture but 'Oriental' was correct. Aunt Daisy, hmv man and cloughie then chipped in. What chance did I have against such a team?

Cesar Cui (one of the Mighty Handful/Five): Oriental Op 50 No 9
Granados (drowned when his ship was torpedoed in WWI) Oriental (from 12 Spanish dances) Op 37 No 2
Rachmaninoff (left Russia and died in the USA, a naturalised citizen) Danse orientale Op 2

So the E was indeed East.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                        Cunning: too cunning for me.

Correct in every particular, and no further explanation necessary - teachers on the left and pupils on the right!
