Following LMcD's Olivier Award winning puzzle, here's a P...
Who is the P that links these three?
Michael leaving sheep chasing to others, Benjamin's blessed decoying shepherds, and Sting's winter-hardy sage.
For an extra point, can you suggest a royal linking work by P?
(P sounds like an immaculate Washing Powder...)

Nyman’s Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds is based on Purcell

Bit of triviia: It was chosen by Daniel Hope (on the Album) for the 2009 EMS "An Early Music Christmas" special. Catherine Bott commented on Sting's handling of the long words & compared it to Hugh Paddick's "It's cooooold, Fiona"
Just Benjamin to go... and the optional connecting piece (which I think you've already found).Last edited by AuntDaisy; 23-12-24, 19:25.

Benjamin Britten's Purcell Realizations includes settings of "How blest are shepherds" and "Shepherd, shepherd leave decoying", consecutive numbers from King Arthur. I assume this is what you're looking for? King Arthur being the royal linking piece.
And slightly heretically, I think I prefer Sting's legato version of Cold Song to the highly staccato one Purcell wrote (or at least everyone else performs).

As Catherine Bott said, "... a major rock star... ...takes a serious approach to Early Music...".
How about Klaus Nomi's version?
So we have:
Purcell as the P
Michael Nyman’s "Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds".
Benjamin Britten's settings of "How blest are shepherds" & "Shepherd, shepherd leave decoying".
Sting's Song of the Cold Genius.
All from or based on Purcell's "King Arthur".
A valiant joint effort by antongould, cloughie & crb11. Not sure who gets R or possibly Q... any volunteers?

Could it be "Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?" from the Dies Irae of the Latin Mass for the Dead, e.g. Verdi's Requiem?
Which translates to "What shall I, a wretch, say then?" from the Morales Requiem booklet.
