Just to confuse things; I believe the following were all born in Vienna and died in California:
    Ernst Toch
    Max Steiner
    Ernst Krenek
    Erich Zeisl

So it coul;d be someone earlier who influenced the later composers, or a later one influenced by all three?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

(Not sure what the H? is.)

NOT Chopin???? I had that too : Rach's Variations on a theme of Chopin, Schoenberg's Valse de Chopin (Pierrot Lunaire) and Bach as having greatly influenced Chop. All red herrings. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.

                          Corelli?

Variations on a Theme of Corelli (Russian: Вариации на тему А. Корелли, Variatsii na temu A. Korelli), Op. 42, is a set of variations for solo piano, written in 1931 by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. He composed the variations at his holiday home in Switzerland.

And Bach wrote Fugue on a theme of Corelli, BWV 579:

But wait: there were also Variations on a theme of Corelli, attributed to Tartini, who wasn't born in Vienna - but I believe Fritz Kreisler was.
