Bingo! Well done. I hand the B-aton to you. (Aragón is also the Fantasia hence the fantasising).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

One died in Cleveland, one died in New York, but the third is still there wielding his baton.

As no one yet has any ideas on LMcD's B, i'd better coleslaw my blink-and-you'll-miss-it A:

Poulenc and Aragon the parisian surrealists; Poulenc set Deux poèmes de Louis Aragon (1943)

The son of Ángel Albéniz, Isaac, composed Suite española No 1, incl the fantasia Aragón

Aragon was where where the folkloric dance the jota (more than a jot like flamenco) originated.

Well, I did think it a bit unfair. Whoever'd even heard of Louis Aragon ('cept me)? How obscure was the clue to Albéniz's dad? How the deuce did anyone spot the cunning clue to the jota? I am among giants

Iota > Jota > Saint-Saens 'Jota Aragonesa'. Pretty straightforward after that!.

Yes - three conductors linked geographically by a 'B'.

George Szell, who died in Cleveland, was born in Budapest.

If I'm on the right track, I'm happy for others to take over, as I won't be around much later today (going to the University of York concert mentioned by Robert Hollingworth in today's Record Review).

You ARE on the right track 3 baton-wielders connected with Budapest. Who would like to pick up said baton?
(I hope you enjoy the concert!)

Can you name another distinguished conductor of the New York Philharmonic who was born in Budapest,, as against Buda, that is to say after 1873?

Ivan Fischer was born in Budapest and is still wielding his baton.
George Szell, named above, was born in Budapest and died in Cleveland.
Our 3rd Budapest-born baton-wielder predeceased George Szell by some 7 years.
