    Nipper’s coming home on Friday

HMV reopens at 363 Oxford Street on 24/11/23:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It’s very unlikely they’ll sell many classical recordings, if they continue their policy of extremely high noise.

I'm sure we'll look forward to an an update on that when Nick has had a chance to chain his bike to the nearby lamppost and take a shufti inside.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I was saddened to look into the Manchester branch recently, where there used to be a large room, behind glass doors, and wholly dedicated to classical CDs (this was at the end of the last century) now there's about five feet of shelf space and much of it is pop dressed up as 'classical'.

Some more of this required perhaps:

For years it's been hard top find anything vacant, lamppost or other, to chain one's bike to anywhere in the vicinity of Oxford Street. And Westminster council - together with owners of premises - are very strict in limiting what one is allowed to chain anything to - not only suffragettes. (Not that I have tried chaining myself to a suffragette). Mustn't spoil all that fresh paintwork!

No signs saying "Be careful when entering or exiting the booth not to kick the gramophone provided for sampling your intended purchase"!

How very backward! We have loads of council installed bike racks along the street. Might be worth suggesting London follow suit:

By the way, Nipper came from Bristol too

It’s been many years since I had a reason to set wheel in Oxford Street (except the first bit of the New Oxford Street end as part of a route home from the City), let alone stop and try to park the bike…

There are plenty of bike racks provided - it's just that they're always full. No one can even place a coat or even towel to indicate prior claims! One day when I was endeavouring to secure my cycle lock a young woman coming to collect her bike said "Excuse me!" When I asked what was troubling her, she said, "Oh I thought you were just about to lock my bike as well as your own"!

I wonder if the other Oxford Street HMV is also re-opening?

Nice photo. I rather like the giant Nipper on the roof of the Historical Society in Baltimore:
A monumental statue of RCA's mascot now sits atop a historical society roof after a life of moving around.

I thought physical media were dead.

Are Fopp, Foyles, Waterstones TCR/Trafalgar/Piccadilly and Hatchards still open........

HMV Sheffield still open but last week its small classical section had been cleared and was entirely empty.

In Europe this wouldn’t raise an eyebrow, but Iwas in Concord, Massachusetts 2 weeks ago. Our parking spot on a cobblestone street had 1) A hitching post left over from colonial times
                              2) a parking meter, and
                              3) an EV charger.
All within a foot of each other
