      That's very sad to hear.

I've never forgotten seeing him in a late night double bill when I was student: Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in 'Dracula' and the Marx Brothers in 'Duck Soup.' That scene when he walks down the staircase to welcome his guests, smiling his greeting with the fangs just out of sight, was wonderful.

Now there's a scenario The Prince of Darkness at the pearly gates an hour or two after James Last - what'll they make of that?

Are we sure that he is really dead? Will he be buried with a stake thru his heart?

JL will probably start playing Fangs for the Memory.

I once had a calender that featured a shot of female breasts with vampire teeth painted on them. It was called 'Fangs for the Mammary'.

To make amends - Sir Christopher had a very fine singing voice (exactly as you'd imagine it to be from his reonant speaking voice) and considered a career as a professional singer, receiving tuition from Ludwig Weber (the Ochs on Kleiber's Rosenkavalier and Gurnemanz on Knappertsbusch's Live Parsifal). Sadly not shown in its freshest bloom here:

I wonder whether he liked always being cast as the villain. Today the following villains died: Count Dookoo, Scaramanga, Count Dracula and Saruman - not to mention Fagin (Ron Moody).

I'm afraid to say that in the biz in years gone by he did rather have a reputation for being a crashing bore.

They made a tv movie of the Charles/Diana story in which he was Prince Philip and at one point on set between takes CL was holding court, until most crossly rebuffed by an otherwise warm and friendly Mona Washbourne who blurted out, 'Oh, DO shut up!! You know, you really are a VERY BORING MAN!!'

Meanwhile, there was a posse of child actors playing the younger royals who where constantly hissing and baring imaginary fangs behind his back. To their glee he'd round on them severely ... 'Do you mind??!! I haven't played that part in YEARS!!'

His death and disintegration scene in 'Dracula' was enlivened by a great music score by James Bernard ...

The 1958 Technicolor remake of "Dracula" launched a series of Hammer horror movies, usually starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which were a world-wi...
