Winter plans

got very wet visiting penshurst today, it seems the weather has turned to winter...my plan is to explore the dicovering music archive, visit the library more and perhaps reread some of my books

being from yorkshire i grew up learning to hibernate in the winter

how about you, any winter plans ?

Would this be a CD reissue of the1968 LP set? I remember that well. Stockhausen, Kagel, David Bedford, etc.

I grew to loathe winter in the last few years of my working life as the daily commute became progressively more difficult to bear, especially the dark evenings which were usually wet and windy as well. Any snow and ice made the train and walk journey there and back exhausting and hazardous.

Now that's all in the past I can accept, even like, the special atmosphere of a winter's day, particularly in the lead up to Christmas.

I've committed to going on my daily walk unless the rain is torrential and the autumn and winter has always been my favourite time for reading. As I don't much care for listening to music in daylight, the dark evenings suit me just fine!

There were three sets of 6 LPs each and the CD reissue has them all. I used to have almost all of them on LP as a result of much effort and scouring London record shops when I arrived there at the end of the 1970s. Many of them I'd already heard, having borrowed them from the record library in Swansea. I don't think I can overestimate the effect listening to all that music had on me, from then until now: I still listen to many of them - Ferrari, Kayn, Nono, Evangelisti, Holliger, Kagel, Koenig, Nuova Consonanza, Zimmermann and of course Stockhausen - it's almost like a list of composers whose work has been most influential for me.

Winter plans - trying to find somewhere warm to go during Xmas break that isn't too expensive or crowded... time is running out... otherwise probably spending more time in the (new) house and thinking of things that need changing/improving and actually maybe doing some of it!

When I was working winter presented many problems, but I think at least two things made it bearable. Firstly, during the day I was occupied, and secondly we often went to plays and concerts in the evenings, sometimes driving in very slow traffic with the radio on, or going by train. OK - there was a fair bit of tedium - the effort of getting to and from stations, sitting on trains, sometimes wondering if we'd get home as trains cancelled or diverted etc., but overall it didn't seem too bad.

The move up to Scotland ought to have improved some things, but perhaps it hasn't. Today - as it happens - the weather seems nice - though it wasn't supposed to be according to yesterday's forecast. However often the weather is wet, miserable and cold and dark. There is less to do in the evenings - no concerts or plays every other night, and just keeping warm is a real issue.

Whether I will loathe the coming winter or not is still a debatable issue.
