    David McCallum 19/09/1933 to 25/09/2023

To many people he was Illya Kuryakin to Robert Vaughn’s Napoleon Solo. Thursday evening essential viewing was Top of the Pops followed by The Man from Uncle.

    RIP David

Remember it well, a favourite programme for a 10 year-old me.

    RIP

Another 1960s icon gone! I was just the right age for The Man from UNCLE (10 when it started in 1964) and it was required viewing in our house.

His father, also David, became leader of the Scottish National Orchestra under Barbirolli and later of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, though I expect most here know this.

Likewise cloughie; and then we would be playing it out in the playground on the Friday morning - I loved the way he described himself as being proud of being a dour Scot. I recall on 'Junior Points of View' one time, Ilya being compared to Dougal from the 'Magic Roundabout'. I think it was the blonde mop and the good looks.

Was he not also in 633 Squadron, which featured a fine theme tune by Ron Goodwin (horns in unison).?

I didn't know that the two David McCallums were father and son. Father was also sometime leader of the Beecham RPO in the '50s and the TV orchestra for Eric Robinson's programme with Julian Bream (Serenade? )
