I'm very sorry to hear about this, Daniel. He was an intelligent thoughtful man who took the time to share the music he loved with us (in spite of his ailments for which he granted an occasional grumble but always with good humour!)
My sincere condolences to you and yours, Son of Gamba. Your father was a lovely soul who added greatly to the life of this community and will be very sadly missed by uas all.

I have only just seen this sad news having been away for some time, and I should also like to send commiserations. Gamba's invariable courtesy and knowledge will be much missed, as will his generosity in sharing his fascinating recollections.
I have also recently seen this sad news, having been away for a while. I agree with aeolium and many others here that gamba's contributions were always worth reading for their unique insight and knowledge and for his own humanity. A sad loss for the board and also his family with whom we comiserate.
I am sorry to read this sad news - Daniel (if I may be so bold) gamba's posts were always; amusing, witty, intelligent, kind, informative, and - unique.
Dear gamba - I always felt he must be a lovely chap.
Daniel, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I too have just returned from a short break to see this sad news. Some fine thoughts already expressed above - thank you Cali and others - his tales of derring do have greatly enlivened this forum, a man of many parts. Not so long ago he and I were sharing memories of rock climbing at Harrison's Rocks (mine slightly more recent than his!). Most recently he drew our attention to the Concert des Nations/Capella Reál de Catalunya recording of Charpentier's Stabat Mater - a performance to bring tears to the eyes at the best of times. I shall watch the DVD later.
Photography, theatre ( Old Vic ) 1946-8, industrial, advertising, fashion. Film cameraman, Realist Film Unit, formed by Basil Wright & others ex-Crown Film Unit.
After several years I was invited to join BBC Film Unit, Ealing Film Studios. Seeing little of my family & away for so long I ultimately transferred to BBC Film Unit , Scotland ( a more civillized existence ! ) After accident to back worked on research into documentary films, following which became Assistant Film Unit Manager.
This ultimately led to me becoming in BBC parlance, Manager Film Scotland. Responsible for all matters relating to filming by the BBC in Scotland. A staff of between 70-80 comprising 8 film crews, 10 cutting rooms, dubbing & viewing facilities, film & tape library, maintenance, transport etc. etc.. Viewing 'rushes' every morning was probably the most time consuming aspect of this work. 16 hour days were not unusual !
That's enough !!
Location: Lenzie, a pleasant area about 6 miles north of Glasgow
Interests: Intermittent activity on 'cello & viola da gamba, plus looking for unusual subjects to photograph.
Occupation: Retired - whatever that means !!

Hi verismissimo, I'm currently putting together the collection of stories that my Dad wrote about his life (many of which he posted on here) and I'll make these available. Regards Daniel.

Thanks, Daniel, I'm sure that will be much appreciated.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
