Music means so much to all of us in ways that we cannot always express. It's a great gift to be able to communicate that love and understanding to others, opening our imaginations to new worlds.
My condolences to all those who knew Gamba. RIP
Sincere sympathy and condolences. I remember many of his posts with fondness and shall miss not having more. His reminiscences about his life in broadcasting and filming, his musical discernment, and his deft way of expressing himself (not to mention impressive command of 'the internet') were among the very best things about this Forum.
He was once seen riding down past the outside of my house in Muswell Hill many years ago, sitting on a child's toy trolley. Possibly cause of his bad back ?
and his ability to be trenchant (especially when on a topic close to my heart!) e.g. on this thread which he started (the 'Wobbly Women' title was his ):
Looked forward to sessions featuring Dowland & Strauss ( Four Last Songs ).
Waste of time, especially the Dowland - he can do without tremolo , vibrato, call it what you will.
Same again with the Strauss, although not unexpected.
Dug out my CD of Elizabeth Schwarzkopf to 'take the taste away.' - pure bliss.
I have finished altogether with TV, yes, even music. Especially music, constant camera movement, zooming, tracking, panning, they never stop. CLose-ups of parts of people & their instruments, never stopping, always on the move.
Also, the constant use of music, of sorts, as background to EVERYTHiNG that is shown.
Camera operators are told exactly what to do & when by the director. He is the real menace...
Of course the TV still has a most useful purpose.
A bottle of red, no interruptions & a DVD of ' Les Enfants du Paradis ,' Tous les Matins du Monde , or any Cocteau film.
and - on another personal note - his passion for cars and motor racing as well as music (mirroring my own twin enthusiasms) e.g.
...my passion was & still is the Bugatti type 35 & Delage 1.5 straight 8.
Sorry cannot add to information on the car I was in. Had it been a 300 SL, where were it's wings ?
I also remember Denis Jekinson's article in Motor Sport re. the '55 Mille Miglia - was he not rather sick from time to time ?
In finding an alternative to school I spent quite some time in the paddock at Brooklands & was able to meet drivers & cars. They found me to be a reliable source of cheap labour. I didn't expect to be paid for polishing a Maserati or 4.5l. Bentley - little did they know, that even with my little pocket money, I would have paid them !!
I'm writing this listening in his memory to some Boccherini String Quartets, which I acquired on his recommendation; and shall also listen to a particular piece of Rameau:
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I know of one person sadly not posting on the forum now, due to infirmity, who will or would be very sad to hear of his departure. And yes, those posts of his will always be well worth another look through.
Thanks for letting us know Daniel - our thoughts and feelings are with you.
