What I do like about the new forum is that it doesn't automatically mark every single thread as read every time you shut the browser down. It used to be very stressful knowing that you needed to read everything you wanted to in one sitting because otherwise you wouldn't be able to find your way back to where your unread posts started, so I'm finding it a lot more relaxing knowing that I can just look in and read a couple of threads, then come back and catch up on some others at a later date.

You do know there is the option to do an advanced search and select all posts since a certain day (eg yesterday)? That way once can see at a glance all threads which have changed since one's last visit. I found that worked as an alternative to the "What's new" function when the unread posts disappeared at the end of a session.

Potentially an FAQs would be a good idea for the new forum so that we can all get the best out of it.

Just to say that I like the feature of being alerted when someone quotes a post you've made.
It's particularly helpful if you've asked a question or responded to another post that then gets acknowledged.

For me that now seems a more reliable way to identify new posts than previous methods. There still seem to be gremlns relating to getting to new posts, or revisiting old threads, but as has been mentioned, many of us are just glad to have this site working again somehow.

Was that message notification feature something which was in the older system, but we never noticed?

I'm pretty sure not, as I remember once suggesting to frenchfrank how useful I thought it could be!

PS: I'm not sure that it's 100% reliable: can you change settings so your reply doesn't activate an alert? I didn't get one related to a message of mine that LHC quoted.

When coming onboard, I always first want to check if any of my last posts have received replies. The quickest and most convenient way to do this with the new system, I've found, is to first go to What's New?, and click Go to Post on the name of the latest poster on the topic concerned. This takes one to the poster's home page. Check there for the post in question, and Bob's your uncle!
