If you really think mass popularity is a measure of anything
then Mahler, Bach, Schubert, Mozart et al are insignificant when compared to Beyonce (Turnage's fave, allegedly), Coldplay, AC:DC, Metallica etc etc

Mr GG it is a measure of how serious contemporary art is connecting with the public whilst contemporary classical music does not .

In your ivory towers no doubt I am sure that the endless jabbings of Ferneyhough's string quartets, the scratchings of Lachenmann and the screeching noise of many other contemporary composers are utterly marvellous and their failure to make any impression on all but a coterie is the fault of the great unwashed audience and not those creating the " music" .

Fine , enjoy it but do not be surprised that the Proms no longer want , as in Glock's days to impose it on the public .

If you knew where I went this week doing what you term "music" you would find that very funny indeed

If you really want music to only have one function then settle back in your armchair with your "hundred best tunes" and fall asleep to radio mogadon
Some people want more than that ............

I hope it wasn't a prison . I should have strong grounds for a claim under Art 3 ECHR for inhuman and degrading treatment if they were subjected to some contemporary classical music .

Ah, thanks for the elucidation; now I know why I don't get performed at the Proms (at least according to you).

Such audience as I might nevertheless have comprises people who I'm pretty condifent do actually wash, for what that nugget of information might be worth to you.

And remember what Sorabji said many years ago - I do not live in an ivory tower but a tower of granite (I won't waste my time in quoting the rest - you can go look it up yourself)...

I think that you're sailing dangerously close to the wind here; what do you actually know, from a legal perspective, about ECHR in general and the possible application of its Article 3? For starters, has it occurred to you that, as a British citizen (which I assume you to be) you'd need first to try to bring a case under UK's own Human Rights Act 1998? (though against quite whom and on what specific grounds I have less than no idea)...

Fine - but as someone who works with the poor and disadvantaged nearly all of the time I have a pretty good idea of what impact much classical contemporary music would make on them .

But presumably you do now and you realise that this particular duck has shot itself and is now ready to be butchered, prepared and served...
