I do know a B*gg*r which is a town in South Lanarkshire, with the Pentland Hills some miles away on the horizon.
I think that you have come across it but, since it has a population well below 2,500, it's a village in my book; to be a town proper, it would need to be b*gg*r. I was referring to the Pentlands as a general area, not suggesting that the village is nestled right into the hills themselves.

Hugh MacDiarmid (Christopher Murray Grieve) once lived there and Ronald Stevenson used on occasion to catch a bus from the even smaller village of West Linton that was his home for well over 60 years to pay him visits (he set a number of his works, as you may know).

Somehow I would not credit HMacD as an especially enthusiastic St. George's Day celebrant, given his declared hobby of Anglophobia...

Just out of interest - why are we discussing Scottish villages in the St George's Day Thread ... on St David's Day????

Exactly, and while we are on the subject of Saints days - Saturday 5th March will be St Piran's Day. Down here and Cousin Jacks around the World will sing Trelawny and many other songs of Cornish origin.

We are ONE United Kingdom, ferneyhoughgeliebte ...

And ... B*gg*r is no village, a former burgh no less, whatever it says in ahinton's book.

I merely suggested the B*gg*r was said Scottish village and my suggestion was not intended to be taken either literally or seriously, as I would have hoped was reasonably clear!

Who's "we"? Yes, at present, the four elements that make up the so-called United Kingdom are "one", in a sense, but just let the forthcoming referendum go the wrong way and it'll almost certainly be facing a Scoxit; what the Welsh will do then I have no idea. But in any case, St. George is not the patron saint of Scotland, still less of the "United Kingdom".

"Former" indeed; its population is minuscule, as I pointed out.

But back to the Greek saint, methinks...

                  Getting B*gg*r:

                  Census population:
                  1991 - 1994
                  2001 - 2098
                  2011 - 2294

Going in the right direction in this respect, anyway Was wondering this morning whether to risk another email, but if I'd stayed up a bit later, I needn't have wondered

(In other respects, No change but far be it from me to intrude …)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                      I repeat my

But great indeed to see aka Father Jack Da Jazzbo back!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I don't think that it was ever really being "discussed" and seemingly it's no longer being referred to now in any case!

Just out of interest (again) - is it twin-towned with Bognor?

Why not be like the Georgians and do it twice a year (23rd April & 10th November) ?
