Did he really mean that - minimum wages?

Cameron has made remarks about people on minimum wage contracts not having to pay income tax, if the Conservatives form a future government. Has he missed a loophole?

Surely it would be possible for someone with other income to take a job at minimum wage - and the whole income should still be subject to tax?

I think he didn't choose his words very carefully.

If you think this is impossible, think about older pensioners who may take a minimum wage job to gain extra income, not to mention other scenarios.

I wouldn't imagine that he has the slightest idea of the implications, or of how money works, ( or doesn't) for people on minimum wage.

    why would he?

So applying the same kind of logic he's been dishing out to others recently:

        1. He hasn't a clue

        2. He's not fit to run his own affairs let alone the country.

        3. He's not even got decent advisers to tell him what to/not to say.

        and so on ....

        Ad hominem attacks all round.

Suspension of any kind of credible arguments and thought processes all round.

I'm getting sick of all of them making claims which are simpy not going to work out, in the hope that the electorate will fall for them, which I fear some probably will.

Perhaps Cameroon really meant people ONLY on minimal wages.

Mind, it's a recipe for taxpayer-funded low pay.

Dave, I'm not clear if you are having a go at me and my one liner.
If you are, my point is really that I can't see the point of trying to understand the thought processes at work behind a Cameron statement on people on minimum wage, ( or a combination of low wages) because the conservative hierarchy really aren't likely to be interested in those people, other than they want they to keep on working.

If you aren't having a go, I have misunderstood your post !!

Definitely not having a go at you. If that was a problem I can take it down.

It maybe wasn't the most logical follow up to your comment.

You are right that DC probably has little experience of living on minimum wages.

I was just trying to bring attention to the fact that recently DC has been making ad hominem attacks on EM, ridiculing him and his comments, yet he is just as guilty himself. He probably didn't mean what he said, but in that case he perhaps shouldn't have said those things.

Of course in these times anyone can say anything, and there's not going to be any holding to account. The aim is to get elected and any consequences can be sorted out or denied later on.

They're all at it, trying to out do each other with impossible promises - so otherwise I have no great antipathy towards DC.

Indeed, for a long while, though I'm not a supporter of the Cons, I have believed DC's statements that the economy was in a mess, though not necessarily the cause and blaming the previous government. It seems odd that now there's an election coming up we are suddenly in a great position to move forward, and everything's looking rosy. The Lib Dems are now also peddling this line.

                Dave,

                The manifesto says

raising the tax-free Personal Allowance so that those working 30 hours on the Minimum Wage pay no tax
by that it means 30 hours on the minimum wage will be less than the new first band of taxable income, above £12500.

I'm not on minimum wage, but similarly I have a company pension so for me it means the first £12500 of my pension will not be taxed.

I've long thought that Clegg's biggest error was forcing a referendum on proportional representation too early - what we are hearing (all too often on the BBC) is the continued meaningless recital of party slogans + the crazy give-aways as proposed by Camerloon - coalition government basically worked (I'm not saying the policies were correct) until one party saw they had to force a split as the time for a potential return to our one-party-to-rule system fell into focus - if however we had some proportional representation we could accept that a spectrum of views could be expressed and some acceptable centre of gravity could be possible within a coalition

I accept what you write, but that's not what DC said for the benefit of TV viewers and others. Excusable as a logical mistake (gaff), but less so when he starts picking up on others for what are presumably equally thoughtless comments and behaviour.

It's still tantamount to government subsidising low wage paying employers.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up Dave . I thought that you might have been saying that my attack on Cameron was unsupported, which, TBF, it was.

Interesting snippet on Sky news the other day, ( which I saw on a giant screen in a foyer waiting for a business appointment), which said that the conservative " Notes to speakers" for the election campaign mention the word Cameron 10 times, but Miliband 99 times.

Of course the labour equivalent may be similar, for all I know .

Well, I knew what he meant when I was listening to Radio 5Live today!

Maybe I have the advantage of doing my own accounts and understand these things better than you, and knowing what tax I pay. As well as my pension I am self-employed and I always know that every pound I earn working is taxed 20% and I also pay Class 4NIC (9% of profit-minus-allowance) so over 25% of my business income goes to tax.

I can't check - I did try - but the BBC News Channel at just after 3.30pm had a news clip with Cameron speaking, and I thought he said that no-one on a minimum wage would have to pay income tax. Sorry if I got it wrong.

Also, to be very pedantic the following statement
raising the tax-free Personal Allowance so that those working 30 hours on the Minimum Wage pay no tax
still takes no account of any other income. It doesn't follow automatically that minimum wage earners don't have any other income.
What about people made redundant at 50 or 55, who may be given a hand out, perhaps in the form of an early pension, then later on decide that they need extra income so take a minimum wage job?

Doesn't look to me as though iPlayer keeps the rolling news programmes.
