A pair of timpani — the only ones crafted by legendary viola and violin maker Antonio Stradivari — go on sale today in New York. Bidding on the two drums might go well into eight figures.

Hmm, so when does the Pythagorean comma get upgraded to semi-colonic status?

I do not think the quotation, by itself, suggests anything other than sound advice. Its source, supernatural or not, is irrelevant, in the way that

<<Take but degree away, untune that string,
        And, hark, what discord follows!>>

gives no clue to the political views of its author.

It's cr*p advice IMV as it implies that the perceptions of children are inherently of little value
when often the exact opposite is true

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Fortunately I have little to do with them, but I have never heard any child's opinion worth listening to. They have insufficient knowledge of the world. In any case, it would not suggest why adults should emulate children by creating elaborate practical jokes.

(shades of Simon on Stockhausen )

Perhaps I should have phrased it otherwise, the syntax was misleading. What I intended was: I have rarely heard an opinion expressed by a child which did not, on reflection, show that the child had sufficient knowledge to validate the opinion.

If you have placed your negatives as intended, then all's well with the world.

                          Indeed.

My son, aged seven, arguing with contemporaries over the existence of Father Christmas, announced that he knew a child who had denied the existence of Father Christmas, after which he only ever received Christmas presents from his parents. I've always thought this brilliant.

Oh now you've thoroughly confused me. I have enough trouble with negatives starting aucune and personne. I'll make it simpler: I have rarely heard a child's opinion worth listening to. There, that's how I started, and that's what I meant.

I do not profess to know for sure but what I would say in direct respose to your punctuational question is that, in the absence of such certain knowledge, the standard and, it would seem, traditionally expected colon in the titles of academic dissertations and the like (as exemplified in http://www.physics.nyu.edu/sokal/tra...inglefile.html and like examples from the Postmodernism Generator - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmodernism_Generator and the likes of http://www.elsewhere.org/pomo/) is the kind of thing that happens to bring to my perverse mind the notion of "colonic irritation", an academic condition for which it seems that there is as yet no reliable known cure...
