This was posted on the Radio 3 "Twitter feed" this evening:
Smileys fail me.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I had not looked at the Twitter feed before. It's full of stupid superlatives, somewhat like listening to Radio 1 (try it if you can stand it ) where they frequently say the music is "massive" or "huge."
They are treating us like teenagers. No wonder they are losing listeners.
Do they not understand that many will mature into listening to Radio 3 and serious music?
Strange - I was sure I'd seen that item on R3's Facebook page, with a man seated at the piano. Googling BBC Radio 3 Facebook Arthur Nikisch it comes up with a hit right at the top. But that seems to have disappeared from the page. Given that I did recognise Sir Aido on the tweet, I can't think I didn't notice it on Facebook... Was the wrong one removed?
Reinforces the point we HAVE made to Alan Davey - that people in charge of R3's social media are a bitty lacking in knowledge of classical music.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
Beautiful, melancholy piano music from before the first world war, played on a piano roll by Arthur Nikisch.
Twitter is where the infamous picture of RVW was posted (We complained about that too! )

Just now reading the Essential Classics thread and how it's now produced by Somethin'Else, on their website it states they are also responsible for the BBC's social media so it's hardly surprising that gaffes are made is it?

I don't think the new piccie is Nikisch either. No pointy beard for a start. No idea who it is.
One wonders how this came about. If you google "images arthur nikisch" you get, er, images of Arthur Nikisch. OK if you scroll down to the 7th row you start to get Mahler, Chailly, Beethoven etc., but even if they'd given the job to the work experience it's obvious who the main guy is.
Yes.
Having the assumption that somehow "classical" music is more "mature" or even "serious" than other forms of music just makes some (SOME) of it's enthusiasts sound ridiculous.
