    Google Street View

I have too much time on my hands today. I was idly looking at Google Maps and found two circles to the east of Denver, Colorado. They must be fields irrigated by a rotating sprinkler. Going in closer was surprising:

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

I had been looking for this which I had spotted some time ago.

Any guesses what it is? (No, not a prototype Coke can).

I would imagine it's some sort of test track as it's very flat terrain, a close up reveals some industrial type buildings on the left?
Are you spending this cold (it's not much above 5° here) afternoon faffing around with maps rather than getting a delicious meal ready for Mrs. Flay when she returns from work?

Yes indeed - a test track for a proposed "People Mover" autonomous transit system formerly under development by Otis Transportation Technology Division (TTD) in the mid- to late 1980s near the Denver area. It has been abandoned since the early 1990s.

There's a picture on this page

Too right. She's on her way home and nothing is done. I think we'll go out tonight for a meal!

          Google Street View

The last posts have introduced a subject which I have wanted to discuss on the Forum for some time. Google Streetview have introduced some recent changes at the street view (i.e. on-ground view) level which are unnecessary and very annoying in my opinion. You can still direct yourself by clicking in the direction indicated by the arrow, but turning the compass indicator thingy to look left or right now swings you much further round to one side or the other than previously, when it was possible to fine-tune with greater precision. This means that when adjusting for a bend in the road, you may find half the view blocked by a hedgerow, say, or, if re-adjusting to attempt looking straight ahead, following a row of houses at an awkward angle on the opposite side. Try turning around, to look backwards, and at midpoint the road assumes a strange curved aspect, the effect of which is to disorientate and make it almost impossible at junctions to figure out which of any number of roads one is looking down. This is not helped by no longer being able to enlarge and focus in on details any more, such as street names or house numbers. This has transformed what was previously a pleasurable way of touring places and planning visits based on knowledge of the appearance of buildings, presence of yellow lines for parking, etc., into an afunctional nightmare.

I dislike the new version, find it impossible to navigate with that odd compass button, and other generally annoying new 'features' but you can switch back to the old way of street view (I had to to properly negotiate Flay's link), and now find you can tell it to stick with the old system in future.

I thought it deserved a new thread of its own, S_A.

Yes, I've reverted to the original. I always use the keyboard arrows to move around the screen.

Some of them are quite ubiquitous (and pretty).

                      How about these in Kansas?

                        Impressive Don.

If it can be believed, this is a street view picture of a cat:

!!! Could it be a cat approaching the speed of light, when, having read George Gamov, I calculate it would be six inches shorter than when at rest?
