Interesting bit of journalistic writing :-)

Intro: The head of the BBC has admitted that he does not “understand very clearly” the purpose of hundreds of senior managers at the Corporation.

    Down page:

However, there are still 388 senior managers working at the Corporation, Lord Hall admitted.

    [ … ]

"What I do want to do is understand very clearly what senior managers – who they are and what they do. I think there’s some confusion about that.”

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Of course what we all know Lord Hall means, is that he sees no reason why the original senior management target reduction can't be achieved, given that there is no value being added by around 168 of them (even though he doesn't want to get drawn on numbers).

Given the title of the thread, I thought it worth pointing out that the DG's words had been manipulated to suggest he had 'admitted' he doesn't know what his senior managers do; thus making him seem (as the thread title implies) not to know what's going on in an organisation he is supposed to be running - and that he has 'admitted' as much.

Journalists love to insert verbs like 'admitted' and 'insisted' which subtlely disparage. Mr X 'insisted' that ('methinks he doth protest too much'), Lord Hall 'admitted' - when he made a statement.

If it were a private business (his money) he'd probably be in a bit more of a hurry to cut out the dead wood. As it is with the licence payer funding their (and his) salaries and bonuses it's not really that important and he'd rather not rock the boat

'He said: “We’ve taken a third out of senior managers in that time. We’re now two-thirds of what we were."

Wadda we want? Less () senior managers. When do we want 'em? NOW ....

I wonder who would be griping at the amount the BBC had to shell out to compensate demoted or dispensed with employees if they had to be got rid of instantly? Hall has been in post slightly less than two years.

To avoid the public griping, perhaps the following idea proposed a century ago might be cost-effective:

José Ortega y Gasset: "All public employees should be demoted to their immediately lower level, as they have been promoted until turning incompetent"

... but who could make such a decision? Surely only someone who had also been promoted until turning incompetent and thus due for demotion, and clearly with no authority to make such a 'brave' decision...

And you'd probably still have to compensate them for loss of earnings, damaged career prospects, added childcare expenses for working longer hours &c :-)

if they were at least competent enough to realise their limitations, they could hire an expensive consultant.

But , I think you have nailed it, Vinny.
