    Nanny Knows Best, Dears

People should listen to music for no more than one hour a day to protect their hearing, the World Health Organization suggests.

If we follow the WHO, it will be a more difficult choice than Desert Island Discs - What shall I put in my hour today?

Suspect that applies more to ear phones etc etc than old fashioned radio?

And people wonder why I complain about theatre noise levels!

The WHO's safe listening times are:

85 dB - the level of noise inside a car - eight hours
90 dB - lawn mower - two hours 30 minutes
      95 dB - an average motorcycle - 47 minutes
100 dB - car horn or underground train - 15 minutes
105 dB - mp3 player at maximum volume - four minutes
      115 dB - loud rock concert - 28 seconds
120 dB - vuvuzela or sirens - nine seconds
A few things missed off - what about sitting inside aircraft? Helicopters are diabolical!

I had to look up vuvuzela, so that I could avoid it, but then I guess you'd hear it coming all right.

Well, it does mention concerts, and there seems no dispensation for classicists.

That's because many orchestral musicians suffer from hearing loss.
I think this is a classic case of misreporting.

My initial thought was that it might be a classic case of 1 April having arrived around one month prematurely this year...

They were the cause of my general abandonment of street demonstrations a few years ago, when they were introduced en masse.

Bose headsets with Active Noise Reduction. Quiet as a grave! :-)

Wouldn't it be easier (& cheaper) to just turn the volume down?

Rather difficult "sitting inside an aircraft" which is what Dave was on about. :-)

Well, if you are simply wanting to block out the noise inside an aeroplane why go to the expence of Bose headphones? I find wax or foam earplugs from Boots are very effective.
