    A sad and sobering story

Tributes paid to woman who for many years lived in a car in Chiswick, west London, after falling on hard times

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And baffling? But still very sad.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... she used to attend concerts at the Royal Academy of Music until quite recently; a friend told me how gently she was treated there when she asked questions.

Oh, mon Dieu; where were RAM, HMUK et al? Not asked by anyone to help, presumably...

I think it's made clear that help was offered:

"She politely declined all offers of help, which included housing, getting a freedom bus pass and other matters."

Perhaps not all offers, she appears to have accepted a red Mercedes Benz estate when her Ford Consul was towed away!

As the Ford was her "home" I suppose she didn't have much choice if she wanted to continue with her chosen lifestyle. If anything it adds to the pathos.

Yes, indeed - and sadly the Mercedes was almost immediately vandalised.

Why couldn't the ram step in and help her out with a job at the college, or something like that? Seems amazing that nothing was done to help this person out? RIP

She was almost 80, Bbm, and apparently wouldn't even be willing to accept 'a boiled sweet'. More on here story here, published over ten years ago.

Her tragedy was that she refused help - she wanted her old home back and if she couldn't have it, she wanted nothing.

                      Hiya Caliban,

A most moving story. There was tormented soul there undoubtedly and it seems would not accept any help. It's the sort of story that makes one look at their own situation and take stock, and in my case thank God for my many blessings.

Hence why she parked outside her home. A very sad story. May she rest in peace, indeed.
