We bought this phone from BT, where when you receive one of these calls, or any call, come top that, you can log their number and not have that come through again! It's a pricey bit of equipment, but we have more or loess paid for it now. Well worth having, imo.

I did get one of the folks from "Microsoft" to admit that, Yes, they were trying to scam people.
I find the surrealist poetry tactic also very effective
Some of the UK ones from legal folks are trying to find people who suffered hearing damage in factories so a "HELLO, SPEAK UP, I CAN'T HEAR YOU" approach works well.
Random words work well with the automated things as it totally confuses the speech recognition software.
I tend to say, "He's upstairs, hold on I'll get him". Then I just put the phone on the sofa - that's a settee, or couch in your house MrGG

Couldnt you leave it somewhere other than the lounge/ living room/ front room/ whatever, or on some other piece of furniture?
I imagine Gongers has a chaise longue .I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We used to receive frequent calls from my wife's alma mater, Boston College, asking for donations. I would answer the phone and when they asked for her I used to reply "She's not here now, she has an appointment in Bankruptcy Court" hoping that would cause them to cease and desist. It didn't but when she heard me doing it she caused me to cease and desist.
