Does anyone remember AJP doing a similar TV series on 19th-century figures in the early 1960s? I think it may have been 1962-3, because we were doing 19th-century European history for O-level at the time, and I'm sure I remember AJP talking about Bismarck, and possibly others of that time like Cavour. (Our history master was a pupil of Taylor, so viewing was de rigeur -- on top of the usual mountains of homework, of course!)Comment

Enjoyed the Mussolini talk, but cannot help comparing unfavourably with Hobsbawm. I am not a historian, but I do like a slightly deeper approach.Comment

I am watching them and also enjoying the lack of vaguely relevant video material endlessly recycled, intended I suppose to compensate for our presumed ADHD. (If you can enjoy something for its not being there.)Comment

Oh thanks, Mercia, that's just the ticket. I doubt whether you could have a six-part series of lectures [sic] called 'Men of 1862' these days. And "The text of this lecture will be printed in The Listener". Those were the days!Comment
