Dear me - and how time passes. 82! Mrs Proudie is the role I remember her for. According to Wiki/D Mail she declined a damehood - and OBE. She certainly deserved them.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Miss Jean Brodie for me - and Jeanette Winterson's mum in Oranges are Not the Only Fruit.

She certainly landed some wonderful roles: Miss Marple, Miss Jean Brodie, Mrs Proudie, Mrs Emmeline Lucas (that was to Prunella Scales' Mapp, was it?) - I suspect with enormous relish!

Wonderful actor . Mrs Winterson was indeed also a tour de force as well as the other roles .

And her range - from Miss Marple to the vile Sister Bridget in The Magdalene Sisters; tremendous.

              Sad news.

I chiefly remember her as Miss Jean Brodie in the Scottish Television adaptation that aired back in 1978. Fantastic.

Very sad news indeed. Looking at the roles she played, I have seen a fair few of them! I liked her in the Pride of Mrs Jean Broidie and Miss Marple. Both very compelling. I thought she should have received an honour but she declined both OBE and a Damehood! RIP

Very sad news. Her Lucia (with Prunella Scales's Miss Mapp) was a glorious creation on TV, and I was lucky enough to see her at the NT in Sheridan's The Rivals (with Michael Hordern) - a wonderful production in which Geraldine McEwan was a brilliant Mrs Malaprop. The list could go on and on - she'll be much missed.

                  RIP.

I saw that production of The Rivals:have never wanted to see the play again, as I suspect that one couldn't be topped.

Unfortunately this link doesn't work, giving a '404' page ( 'not found')

It did work but the BBC seem to have removed it or put it somewhere else (I googled it and still got the 404).

Peculiar - there were 3 BBC pages and all have disappeared.

                          OK, thanks for investigating!
