Apart from a feeling of great excitement, I liked this picture of a stupendous collection of coins in a Sainsbury's bag.

Yes. Looking at brief story on the news, I couldn't help wonder how much of the "context" of the find had been disturbed by the metal detectorists.....but without them it wouldn't have been found.....

A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Wonderful!
... and did any of you see the unheralded gem of the BBC4 schedules, the quietly sublime Detectorists? Written, directed and co-starrring Mackenzie Crook, with the equally-magnificent Toby Jones, lots of it made me chuckle - witty, touching, silly....
This news story (apart from the fact that it was in Bucks. whereas the Detectorists were in Berks. I think) reads like the eponymous duo's dream of the Holy Grail of metal detecting (... to quote from the series: "Well, no... the Holy Grail is the Holy Grail of metal detecting")
Only clips here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04kf095 but bound to be repeated."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Looking at some of the pictures of the newly-minted coins I wonder if they can ever piece the story together - was it a daring robbery from the nearby Mint or was some catastrophic event about to occur necessitating the burial? Totally fascinating.

I've been hugely enjoying the current second season of Detectorists - again, perhaps symbolically, hidden away somewhat on BBC Four.
If anything I think it is even more successful than the first season, writing and cast full of gems - above all, Lance and Andy, respectively Toby Jones and writer/director Mackenzie Crook
Highlights for me: the discussion about Lance's ex sawing the bed in half; and the dialogue commencing
ANDY - WHAT YOU GOT?
LANCE - BOAT
....
All episodes still available on iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/p036yljc
