    Announcements: Changes 2015

Seems reasonable to me, FF. Never was a particularly political animal so have tended to avoid the politics forum.

Anyway, mainly posting (here as I cannot add to the announcement) to say thank you for running the Forum and the very best wishes for 2015.

Thanks, Grumpy! I was waiting for someone to object that they now aren't able to respond - and was planning to say, well, you can respond somewhere else if you just start a new thread ! Happy New Year to you too!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Many thanks from me, too. You managed to kick RW out in the old year. Let’s hope the new year will bring many positive changes and development.

And thank you very much for your hard work to keep this Forum going.

Thanks, ds. I am rather looking forward to the coming year in the hope that it will see the new leadership taking Radio 3 in a more appropriate direction. I know he has friends in high places

Yes, thank you for a further year of hard work on here and RIP the politics strand. Despite the best efforts of the local sherriff's department and many of the participants it kept lapsing into Dodge City mode, so it is more than understandable.

            Happy new year!

Thanks, ER and SHB. Let's hope for a busy year for FoR3 and a joyful return to Old Times!!!

I still think it's going to be difficult excluding party politics from the forum in this, the general election year, when arts policy and funding will as sure as tomorrow be on everyone's lips, pens and keyboards.

One can hardly blame a Liberal Democrat not wanting to talk about politics this year !

But the main problem is not WHAT people say, but how they say it. And how they treat people they don't agree with (including politicians ). Nonsensical non-contributions aren't helpful.

Problem of definition as usual, imo. "Political" is a swear word in some contexts, but the polis does tend to matter to its inhabitants and there's no way round that. Personal is political, politicians are merely persons and there is false opposition between the words.

That's why 'party politics' is specified. The phrase is understood by most people. The Terms and Conditions/House Rules have been updated.

But most of the discussions on the 'politics' board weren't about party politics (including some of the most vehement ones), but about political philosophies (eg capitalism v. socialism) or issues like same-sex marriage.

You are quite right. Yet the same handful of people still managed to divide along the same lines regardless of what was being discussed. Sticking to general 'theory' rather than current affairs gives less opportunity for sarcasm and insult. Capitalism v socialism was dealt with anyway on the Ideas and Theory board.
