Had a flat mate back in the early 70s in the West End of Glasgow who started the day regularly with a dose of Joe Cocker. Can't think of him without thinking of his very excellent slurring take on 'Bye Bye Blackbird'.
The Grim Reaper has certainly been rather acti9ve in taking away from artists that are truly great in whatever genre they were involved in. Joe Cocker RIP

Back in the sixties Vance Arnold and the Avengers became Joe Cocker and the Grease Band. With a Little Help from friends came Woodstock, Mad Dogs and Englishmen then something of a descent courtesy of the Rock lifestyle followed by being raised up back to long term respectability within the music world. I remember his 'Little help from my friends' from the 2002 Palace concert with the great sound of the backing singers and musicians including Steve Winwood!
RIP John Robert Cocker, shining Sheffield Steel!
Very sad news indeed. At least that wonderful distinctive voice is preserved on many fine records from a long and distinguished career.
Much of his best known work has already been mentioned, but I have always had a particular liking for his 1982 reggae infused release ' Sheffield Steel ' produced by Chris Blackwell on Island Records - recorded with the Compass Point Allstars, the drums of Sly Dunbar and the bass of Robbie Shakespeare provide a great platform for J C's vocals on songs written by Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Cliff amongst others.
