It sounds like Britten and Kildea all over again. In both cases, they wrote their music before they died - and that's all that matters.

Wasn't there a medium who claimed to have taken dictation from a number of dead composers?

Yes; Rosemary Brown, who became quite famous for a while. In fact, she became a Large.

And here she is playing a Ballade Chopin dictated.

Rosemary Brown (27 July 1916 -- 16 November 2001) was a spirit medium who claimed that dead composers dictated new musical works to her. I read Rosemary Brow...

Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Beethoven all dictated works to her, Beethoven even his 11th symphony (in 2 mvt)

                      *cue: decomposing joke* ...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

... I enjoy Alkan, a lot - but really for me he is (along with Duphly and Lefébure-Wély, whom I also relish... ) one of the best really bad composers.

Whereas Chopin is one of the best really good composers...
