You've already missed out!

The earliest sunset (and hence longest evening) was on December 7th. This does not coincide with the shortest day. It's all because the solar noon is not always at 12 noon on the clock.

That's all very well, but what do you think about the days getting longer?

The confusion may possibly arise between the times of sunrise and sunset in particular locations, and the length of daylight to the northern hemisphere as a whole...

Though the date is obviously a bit arbitrarily set, there is some truth in it, as though the actual daytime is lengthening, sunset still is earlier day after day for more than a week. Daylight begins earlier in the morning from December 21st onwards, but for each two minutes added in the morning, one minute is lost in the afternoon for more than a week.

Ed: it's the other way around.
