I once found myself seated next to him at a 1995 Concertgebouw/Chailly Prom at a time when he was rarely seen in public.

I was quite surprised when I heard it on the news - he seems to belong to such a long-ago time that I assumed he was already dead.

Jeremy and Marion Thorpe sat next to me at Snape Maltings (ECO/Perahia) in the 1980s (he next to me, Marion on the other side of him). He already looked quite unwell. There was no eye contact from him as they passed me to take their seats and I respected his privacy. Initiating a conversation would have been quite uncool, I think.

Things like that are always difficult, you probably did the right (not cool) thing.

I wouldn't have been able to resist - if he wants privacy, stay indoors!

a polite " Hello" would have been OK.

I always like to chat to folks at concerts anyway. adds to the fun.

                      Kyung-Wa Chung would disagree!

Marion could offer ts a glass of water.

Generally I'm with you, ts, but on this occasion the body language indicated that it might not be welcome.

                            I'm sure she would have.

I wonder if Kyung-wa Chung would have sat all quiet and attentive to one of JTs speeches?

Undoubtably, that's the issue under discussion!
