I was quite surprised when I heard it on the news - he seems to belong to such a long-ago time that I assumed he was already dead.

Jeremy and Marion Thorpe sat next to me at Snape Maltings (ECO/Perahia) in the 1980s (he next to me, Marion on the other side of him). He already looked quite unwell. There was no eye contact from him as they passed me to take their seats and I respected his privacy. Initiating a conversation would have been quite uncool, I think.
