What is the view (if any) amongst the discerning forum members of the RSNO? Having only relatively recently developed any real interest in music, I would be interested to know. Due to geography they are the orchestra I see most frequently. I know Oundjian did not get the best press on arrival, I think due to his conservative choice of repetoire. That said, they were on stunning form last month performing the DSCH violin concerto.

      Or Halle and RSNO

Cardiff Council Cabinet Meeting: 15 May 2014 received a Report: "Management of Leisure Centres and Arts Venues" which outlined future management options. It was resolved that procurement processes be carried out for the future management of the Council's leisure centres and arts venues. A recommendation will be reported back to Cabinet as to the decision regarding the contract award(s), and an engagement and consultation exercise will be carried out with staff, Trade Unions and key stakeholders on the proposal.

In 2014, Cardiff Council granted £10,000 to the annual July week of Welsh Proms, to support just one orchestral concert instead of the usual four, but Owain Arwel Hughes (founder, conductor and artistic director of the Welsh Proms) took the personal risk of underwriting the other three orchestral concerts, and so they were able to be presented as "normal" and I understand that they were successful, with very good attendance figures.

As Richard Tarleton says in #15, the St David's Hall programme for 2014/15 is in line with previous years, including the classical music International Concert Series and Lunchtime Concerts. In fact, there is also an additional series of three Lunchtime Contemporary concerts.

Well, I must have been to 100's of (R)SNO concerts since my first in 1977 so they are my favourite orchestra. Without doubt, the Jarvi years were the orchestra's 'Golden Years' but the Denueve period was very good too. IMHO, Oundjian is settling well into the job and is gaining confidence. No one is going to claim the RSNO plays at the same level as the London orchestras but since I don't live in that area...

I think part of the problem is trying to actually get into the loading bay to get the orchestra there in the first place. There are (myths?) stories about a certain mr Reg Dwight being turned away at the barrier by the security guards.

Not a mention yet for the Britten Sinfonia.

The most impressive symphony orchestra I have heard over the last year was probably the LPO, and they have the enormous plus of the wonderful Jurowski.

Although the standards of practically all professional orchestras seem to be sky high these days.
We are very lucky in that regard, IMO.

The RSNO has some very good players/soloists, such as their principal flute, Katherine Bryan.

The LPO are riding high at the moment with the inspirational Jurowski at the helm. I'd agree that the LSO is off form as the Gergiev era thankfully winds down but recent Bruckner concerts with Haitink have revealed them at their considerable best. Watch this space if Rattle takes on the LSO (if rumours are to be believed).

I certainly agree with that - her performance of the Nielsen violin concerto a few weeks ago on R3 (albeit not with the RSNO) was exhilarating. I since bought her recording of it, which I can thoroughly recommend.

Wonder how she managed the double-stopping....

Back OT, most of my listening is via recordings and radio currently, but both the LPO and and RLPO seem to be on great form at the moment.

Oops. I did of course mean flute concerto. Although she is a very talented lady.

The Ulster Orchestra deserves a mention. I've only ever heard them on the radio and enjoy their music making but a few years back they gave a performance of the Tchaikovsky third orchestral suite that I've never heard equalled. They are having a tough time at present and their future is beset with difficulties - see the separate thread.
Otherwise its a toss-up between the BBC Scottish and the Nat Orchestra of Wales for my affections.

"BCMG"? I'll probably kick myself when you explain. Until then, I'm stumped.
