I really do think that it is possible to be put off by unfriendly users, and many new users have little experience of posting, so to be shot down at first flight is very offputting. Your experience suggests that there are also some people (maybe not regulars) who enjoy intimidating others. I'm glad you got over that. Personally I feel that this is a well regulated and generally friendly board.

It does make me cringe when people are insensitive, not about what they say but who they're saying it to, and in what circumstances.

I like the Wikipedia axiom: "Alway assume good faith." Even when we get newcomers who are unfriendly (and that does happen, doesn't it?), it's best to hold fire until their purpose in joining is clear.

As for being 'well-regulated', there have been those who have resigned because they consider it too regulated and interfering Mea culpa.
