But he's also, as someone once said, 'frequently trivial'

Why do I feel that what Zuchini really wanted to say was "intelligent enough to have a go at the FoR3 Forum"?

          And mistaken.

For years the critic Norman Lebrecht bestrode the classical music world inspiring fear, loathing and respect in those whose careers he could push out of joint with a few acerbic words from his pen or over the airwaves on his Radio 3 programme.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Egg wetter free. I first came across him when I took out his just published 'Maestro Myth' book from my local library. In the early 90s you could still just about expect to find new books like that.

It was a very interesting read, but I felt that his political/cultural views got in the way a bit. I have bought most of his books.

He is always very interesting and adds value to 'our world'.

If he suddenly disappeared, he'd be sorely missed.

If one already knows even a little about any particular topic on which he chooses to comment, his noisy dilettante essence is soon revealed.

I don't think he claims to be an expert on all the things he writes about. He has an interesting and accessible style, with a bit of up-front provocation. Since he isn't going to change, I'd rather have him, than not.

Edit: Now you've tidied your post up, I would add that his 'Maestro Myth' would be a worthwhile read whether you know a lot about the subject, or a little.

                          He would certainly be missed.

It would worry me if I were unsure whether what I was reading was factually accurate, whether in a book (Maestros, Masterpieces & Madness - neatly described as 'pulped fiction') or news http://properdiscord.com/2013/01/24/...pick-with-you/, regardless of how entertaining.

Lebrecht deliberately over-steps the mark. We know that.

Sometimes, things will be as per the item in the link you give. But he's otherwise thought provoking and stimulating.

IMV, if Lebrecht is approached knowingly, (it doesn't take long to work out where he's going on a topic), with your caveat, then I really can't see why people shouldn't embrace him. He's very interesting and entertaining.

Oh Bryn, that is quite beautifully put. Message of the year old bean.
