Weather perfection today - cloudless sky, warm late summer / early autumn sunshine, gentle breeze.

Did 6 lengths of the Mall on the bike just for the pleasure of it - on Sundays, it's closed to motor traffic, just saunterers and cyclists...

It's my top tip for anyone in London on a sunny Sunday: hire a bike and meander along the Mall and up and down Constitution Hill (and on into Hyde Park via the cycle lanes) - enjoy the heart of the city without having to share it with any motor vehicles.

Especially pleasant with the Early Music Show on Tafelmusik playing in the ears...

Over the years, I've always found there's a point during the last week of the Edinburgh Festival where the evening air just chills slightly and, for me, that's the cue that summer is coming to an end and Autumn is not far off. However, it didn't happen this year and today, having returned from Tesco, the air is still pleasantly warm.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing since the winter may feel shorter, or a bad thing as it may be a sign that global warming is making itself felt.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing since the winter may feel shorter, or a bad thing as it may be a sign that global warming is making itself felt.

It's not uncommon for temperatures to reach into the low 30s Celsius in September, and for nighttime temperatures to hold up correspondingly. What does seem unusual is for them to remain at that height for more than a day - the weather patterns becoming much more mobile at this time of the year owing to heat and energy being injected from tropical cyclones running up into the temperate jet stream from the Gulf of Mexico, and thus breaking up any set-up that would be more likely to stabilise into a lengthy heatwave in, say, July or August.

At the moment it seems that high pressure ridging to our north-east in preventing this energy from getting into our local circulation, steering it off to the north-west, though all seems set to change by Saturday, probably, when temperatures will be down to where we would expect them to be. The big question the "experts" are asking is, will it thunder in the next few days; and if so, where?

Well, we usually go on holiday at this time of year, as usually, it's this week that has very nice weather, indeed! las, this year we have had to cancel our holiday, but hopefully next year be different! :)

Had a huge thunderstorm here between 6pm and 7pm with rainfall of biblical proportions and it went very dark, darker than night in fact. Haven't had one like this for many years. Earlier in the day, it was very hot with a burning sun, so intense it was more what we would expect in mid-July.

Almost exactly the same here in the Pennines, Pet - except that the thunderstorm arrived about an hour later. "Huge" is right - positively explosive!

We are hearing similar from back home,some flooding in Stockport.
Here on the Teguise coast however it's a very warm evening with a pleasant light breeze and Beethoven Cello Sonatas ringing in my ears.
