I'm just a southern wimp. I love the mountains of the North and the West of these islands, but in the end I don't think I could take the weather that goes with...

Too much barrenness oop north, not enough trees for my liking. Once you've seen one sprig of heather you've seen 'em all. But the atmosphere there is usually much clearer than down here, it has to be admitted.

Only prob oop 'ere at the mo is that one cannot actually SEE the fells, so low and swirling and swilling is the rain/cloud. BUT at least I know they're all there, and waiting for my later walk no matter what the weather. Tuff as stuff, eh, that's uz.........!!

Keep watching the Test Match - dry pitch, bright light, crowd in summer gear.......blimey!

        Simply awful oop 'ere.
Serves me right for boasting about the North.

Same here only it felt stronger than 30 mph here. What on earth are we doing having winds like this in August?

I well remembver a serious gale that took place in August 1956, when I was ten. It was brought by an ex-hurricane that had hitched a ride onto the jet stream and rejuvenated, bringing winds of over 75 mph.

Nothing like that with today's effort. In fact last autumn's record El Nino appears to have had the effect anticipated by the record-watchers, in that no tropical depressions developing in the Caribbean area have developed into fully-fledged hurricanes. We aren't likely to escape that happening entirely this year, but with any luck this is just a one-off caused by the increased prevalence of a zig-zagging jet stream that is thought to be a consequence of fresh water ice melt, ergo the warming up of the northern Atlantic that's been observed for a few years now, which in turn has led to sharper changes in pressure patterns and distribution, with deeper depressions than normal occurring at all stages of the year, formed in advance of downward plunges of arctic air, as is expected to happen from Tuesday onwards next week, bringing the possibility of ground frosts to Scotland and the north!

In case you haven't come across this site which often has interesting articles on jet stream activity.
Prolonged cold snaps on the East Coast, California drought and frozen mornings in the South all have something in common – the atmospheric jet stream which transports weather systems that's taken to meandering all over North America.

I learn so much more about the UK weather here than in any BBC etc etc bulletin. Pity.
AND what becomes very clear is the sheer variability of UK weather and how it differs pretty radically from the publicly expressed national weather bulletins. Hmm.

Yes indeed - several recent TV programmes on extreme recent weather have focussed on the changed behaviour of the jet stream. Thanks for the link, Pianorak.

Rather warm the weather today, and maybe a touch on the humid side too.

I have the latest Sibelius Music Software Notation programme up and running! My goodness, how flash! :)

I don't often post on this thread because it is just the same old, same old, boring...............

This must however, be quite the worst summer in thirty years of living in the Highlands of Scotland. Just grey, grey, wet, wet, and not much sun. Ah, well!

I can sympathise. Apart from the odd day or two it's not been that much different here though a good deal drier, I imagine.

Yesterday was a glorious summer's day here, no wind at all, bags of sunshine and perfect temperatures. Today has been the same apart the very gusty and ruinous wind. It's now died down somewhat to leave a fine evening.

Savage, wild end of the day [7th Aug] - westerly gales like even oop 'ere we rarely get, and sheets of rain, more or less total whiteout of and on the fells. Very dangerous walking conditions.

... a lovely weekend down here - yesterday over from the Chilterns to the Cotswolds England was looking like a hyperreal caricature of those Shell Guides - swaying golden cornfields, lush copses, hot with blue sky and the occasional fluffy cloud, idyllic villages, change-ringing in Chipping Campden, just lovely. Back in London walking along the Regent's Canal from King's Cross westwards to Paddington was delightful too.

I know oop north can be amazing - sometimes it's quite nice down here too...

Very windy and rainy here on the Irish Sea coast. A big music festival has been pulled half through owing to winds.
