The front whose effects in Wales Anna has vividly described just passed through London an hour ago, with a couple of hours' worth of light to moderate rain and winds only gusting to strong. Temperature's dropped from 12.5 before the rain to 10 C now and expected to drop further as the now WSW-erly pushes in. Seems like Eve is off the agenda for all but the Orkneys, barely getting mentioned in the media now, and for it not to have been as bad as anticipated, though all the rain alerts are still in place in the areas already badly affected.

          Best wishes to all!

I nipped out at 10.30 to get some fruit - shops not too busy and still plenty of milk and bread - and was rewarded by the sky clearing and blueness and sun which lasted for quite a while but I've just checked the weather station report and the rain during the cloudburst early on was 149.6mm/hour!! The temps, which started at 11° at 6am has dropped 3 degrees, then up 2, then down to a measly 7.5° and is now on the climb again with a mix of short but heavy showers. The moon, although not full until tomorrow, was lovely, bright as day, and the sky very starry last night before the rain came down again.

Best wishes to all stormy weatherers and may your Christmas be peaceful, merry and bright

              And to you, Anna

Lovely and bright here just now but Mrs Flay, some 20 minutes south of here, says it is pouring down.

I think I've mentioned I have family in Lancashire, (Rossendale) near to Ramsbottom. I've just seen the Irwell has broken its banks, Ramsbottom is under water and picture of The Waterside at Summerseat (which I know very well) has been swept away. So I phoned to check all ok and not venturing forth and find half of them have gone to Bury shopping at the sales and evidently struggled to get there - what an idiotic lot they are <fume at stupidity of my family emoticom> It's when it's an area you know well that the reality of the situation really hits home. I shall now worry.
Red warning for part of Lancs, N. & W. Yorks - will it never end? Hope all our Northern friends are keeping safe.

Crikey, I never realised - think of the times we've been so near .... yet so far! I've just had a phone call, they have returned. Bury was deserted, they bought two items in Top Shop. I asked was it worth risking life and limb for a piece of cheap fashion? Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Todmorden and Walsden have got it bad, evacuations in progress. We'll have to wait and hope DracoM will sign in sometime. Funnily enough didn't ferny post about Mytholmroyd not long ago, something going for a walk there about etymology of the name, is he near there?

We are lucky in Liverpool because we're up on a sandstone escarpment so although I am very near the river, we are never flooded. Further up the coast towards Southport, and the coastline of the Wirral, do flood sometimes, but not this time it seems.

We were going to my sister's in Dinorwic, but just in time we saw that the A55 is closed because of floods. She hadn't even noticed because she lives halfway up a mountain.

                                - Just heavy rain where I am, but an elderly friend of mine has just moved into a flat in Hebden Bridge. He was planning to go to Doncaster for the race meeting today: hope the weather doesn't prevent him going (or from getting back, for that matter).
